Retail Associate

Reports To: RETAIL SUPERVISOR
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The primary function of this position is customer assistance and customer retention.  Retail Associates are directly supervised by the Retail Supervisor, and perform a wide range of duties within the retail department.  A polite and accommodating personality combined with the ability to change pace frequently is necessary for success in this position.  Retail Associates are frequently in contact with customers, and have a profound effect on repeat business.  It is important that employees create an environment that is comfortable and organized, as well as possess the ability to offer sound advice to customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Completes an orientation/training program administered by the Retail Supervisor

  • Stocks shelves, counters, or tables with merchandise

  •  Stamps, marks, or tags price on merchandise

  •  Occasionally arranges merchandise in advertising displays to promote sales

  •  Continuously checks that marked prices match sale prices

  •  Notifies supervisor when any inventory is running low so that more may be ordered

  •  Able to quickly locate and access all parts, supplies, and inventory

  •  Obtains merchandise requested by customer or receives merchandise selected by customer

  •  Answers customer's questions concerning location, price, and use of parts or merchandise

  •  Is able to calculate any applicable sales discount to determine price

  •  Accepts payment and makes change

  •  Performs opening/closing procedures for cash registers

  •  Wraps or bags merchandise for customers

  •  Cleans shelves, counters, or cabinets and front faces merchandise

  •  Conducts water tests on samples provided by customers and provides detailed instruction for treatment

  •  Continuously learns about all parts, equipment, and chemicals offered so that the most effective advice is given to customers

  •  Up-sell merchandise as the opportunity presents itself

  •  Answers phones and directs calls

Education and/or Experience               

Less than high school education; must have one to six months related experience or training.

Language Skills               

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills               

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability               

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Qualifications               

Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work weekends.

Must complete retail training program administered by the Retail Supervisor.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to pool and hot tub chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
